Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about our flying school

  1. What effects is the coronavirus pandemic having on training?
    We provide training adapted to the challenges presented by coronavirus. In light of the extremely serious, rapidly changing developments and the unpredictable consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, we have implemented measures at our Airliner Campus, including online courses via video conference, in order to provide training with the usual quality and with no delays.
  2. I’m interested in training at TFC, but I’m not sure if being a pilot is the right job for me. How can I find out more?
    We will be happy to help at any time if you have any questions – just call us or send us an email. You are also welcome to visit our Airliner Campus at any time. We host regular monthly open evenings. You will find all the dates here. Of course, you can also book an appointment with us at any time, for a face-to-face meeting here or via video conference. To do so, send us an email to atpl@tfc.aero or call us on +49 (0) 201 848 402. Of course, our face-to-face meetings will take place in compliance with the relevant coronavirus safety guidelines.
  3. What are the training courses at TFC like?
    We provide training and advanced training for airline pilots and instructors, and our training is conducted both privately and as part of airline programmes. Our range of courses includes ATPL (A) – Airline Transport Pilot License and MCC – Multi-Crew Cooperation Training, as well as our Aviation Management course in cooperation with FOM University of Applied Sciences, alongside your training. Unlike other flying schools, we also provide training for the MPL (A) – Multi-Crew Pilot License. Here, your training will go from simulators right up to our fleet of modern training equipment, with the support of our experienced team.You will find all the information about our training programmes here.
  4. What makes TFC different?
    TFC is one of the world’s leading flying schools (number 8 in the Aviation Voice ranking) and provides the highest level of professional pilot training. Here, you will find all the resources necessary for successful training: dedicated experts, a modern aircraft and simulator fleet, and selected flight base locations. All training takes place in our modern training centre at our Airliner Campus in Essen, located amazingly in the heights above the Baldeneysee lake in Essen and shaped by a family atmosphere.
     
    Our programme stands out in all areas because of a holistic training concept. This includes coordinated training phases in which theory and practice consistently intertwine. Our modern and homogeneous training fleet – single-engine and twin-engine – made up of Cessna, Aquila, Piper and Grob aircraft, has glass cockpits (EFIS if we were to use technical jargon) and digital paperless cockpits. The associated simulator is an exact replica. Other simulators for type ratings B737, A320 and B777 support not only practical training, but also theory teaching, and will make your training a holistic experience.
     
    In cooperation with FOM University of Applied Sciences, we also provide the opportunity to combine your passion for aviation with industry-specific management know-how in our Aviation Management course, alongside your training. You will find all the information here.
  5. How long does the training last?
    Training takes approximately 18 to 24 months. You will find an overview of the relevant training content here.
  6. How is the training structured, and what is the content like?
    Training here is structured into two theory phases (Phase I and Phase II) as well as two practical phases (Phase I and Phase II), each of which take place alternatingly: Theory Phase I, practical Phase I, theory Phase II, practical Phase II. The phases are flexible and can be adjusted, for instance in the event of adverse weather. Your practical flight training will take place on board our modern training fleet comprised of Cessna, Aquila, Piper and Grob aircraft, all of which are available with glass and digital paperless cockpits. Including all interim exams, but not the type rating, pilot training is comprised of a total of 195 hours (block time). 55 of those hours (block time) could consist of ground time with instruments.

    • – Training on single-engine and multi-engine aircraft
    • – Instrument flight (aircraft and simulator)
    • – Multi-crew cooperation (MCC)

    Theory training consists of at least 750 hours (face-to-face teaching and CBT) and covers the following subjects:

    • – Air law
    • – Airframe/systems/Powerplant
    • – Instrumentation
    • – Mass and balance
    • – Performance (aeroplane)
    • – Flight planning and monitoring
    • – Human performance
    • – Meteorology
    • – General navigation
    • – Radio navigation
    • – Operational procedures
    • – Principles of flight communications
  7. When can I begin training to be a pilot?
    You can apply for a training programme at any time. The next courses will start on 06.07, 21.09 and 09.11. You will find an overview of all the course dates here.
  8. How do I apply?
    There are two ways you can start your training here: via a private TFC course or via an airline programme. Our current partners are AeroLogic, Sun Express, Condor and German Airways. No matter which path you choose, you will always apply directly with us. Send us your cover letter, CV and most recent certificate by email to atpl@tfc.aero. We will get back in touch with you one or two days after receiving your documents, to arrange an appointment for an aptitude test.
  9. Can I apply for all training programmes at the same time?
    Yes, parallel application for all training programmes is possible.
  10. What is the selection process like?
    We will get back in touch with you promptly after your application, to arrange an appointment for an aptitude test. For the private TFC courses, you will sit an aptitude test, lasting approximately three hours, on a computer at our Airliner Campus. The aptitude test covers several areas, including cognitive and logic tasks, English, spatial awareness, physics and multitasking.
    For the airline programmes, you will undergo an approximately three-day selection process in cooperation with the airline. Contact us directly if you want to find out more about the selection process.
  11. Does it count if I have previously passed a selection process?
    Yes, it is generally possible for us to take people who have already passed a selection process. Please contact us directly.
  12. How do I finance my training?
    There are several ways to finance your training. We work with various banks and will help you look for suitable financing. Please contact us directly to find out more about individual financing for your pilot training without using your own funds. You can also apply for BAföG funding. We will be happy to help you apply for BAföG.
